Taxco Artist JH Sterling Silver & Amethyst Large Modernist Pin Wheel Brooch Circa 1960s

Measurements: 2"H x 2"W x .25"Thick (5.08cm x 5.08cm x .64cm)

Markings: Conjoined JH in a Sterling Mexico Circle - Eagle 3

Weighs: 9.4g

A striking vintage Taxco modernist brooch crafted in sterling silver and centered with a polished purple amethyst cabochon.

The sculptural design features six sweeping, dimensional silver arms arranged in a dynamic pinwheel or sunburst formation, creating wonderful movement and depth. Each curved element rises gently from the surface, giving the brooch a bold three-dimensional profile while maintaining the clean, fluid lines associated with mid-century Mexican modernist jewelry.

At the center is a smooth domed amethyst cabochon in a soft violet-purple tone, providing a beautiful contrast against the highly polished sterling silver.

The reverse is marked with a conjoined JH maker’s mark, Sterling Mexico, and Eagle 3. The JH mark is documented in Mexican silver hallmark references, including Bille Hougart’s The Little Book of Mexican Silver Trade and Hallmarks, although the exact identity of the maker remains unattributed in currently accessible references. Other surviving JH pieces carrying the same Eagle 3 mark confirm this as a recognized Mexican silver workshop or maker.

The brooch has recently been professionally polished and presents beautifully. The silver is bright and reflective, and the amethyst remains secure and attractive.

Condition: Excellent vintage condition with no noted dents, breaks, or significant damage. Any lines visible in photographs are reflections caused by the highly polished surface.

A beautifully sculptural example of vintage Mexican modernist jewelry and an appealing collector’s piece for lovers of Taxco silver, gemstone jewelry, and mid-century design.
