Striking and highly distinctive Rune Tennesmed modernist butterfly pendant necklace from Sweden, dating to circa the 1960s.

This fabulous oversized pendant is crafted in solid pewter and designed as a bold stylized butterfly with a beautifully sculptural three-dimensional form. The wings are softly curved and accented with carefully placed circular piercings and dramatic open cut-out centers, giving the piece wonderful depth, balance and visual movement. The result is a design that feels both playful and sophisticated—an excellent example of Scandinavian modernist jewelry from the period.

The pendant has a strong architectural quality despite the natural butterfly theme, which is one of the things that makes it so appealing. Rather than a delicate or overly literal interpretation, Rune Tennesmed created a butterfly with clean lines, geometric symmetry and a substantial presence, giving it a distinctly Mid-Century Modern / Scandinavian modernist character.

This pendant remains suspended from its original chain, which complements the scale and bold design of the piece beautifully. Both the pendant and chain are in excellent vintage condition with only very light wear and a soft light patina consistent with age.
